Obituary for Clotilde Garcia

Clotilde Garcia, on October 14, 2021. With the unexpected passing of her mother, Cleofia, Clotilde became the Matriarch of our family at an early age. As one of ten children, she was the main support for her father Manuel Benito Juan Garcia, especially in raising her six younger siblings in Puerto Rico. Her parents relied on the almanac to formally name their ten children, however, the siblings gave each other nicknames. Hers was Godin. Clotilde came to New York City as a young woman in her twenties. She encouraged her younger siblings to join her, and gradually they did. Eventually she settled in the Gramercy Park section of NYC where she lived in the same apartment in East Mid-Town Plaza for over fifty years. During that time she was given the keys to the park for her son to enjoy during the ‘70’s, which was quite a privilege.

As Clotilde’s continuing role of Matriarch, nothing was more important to her than her family. She enjoined family trips to the beaches in Long Island, the Palisade carnivals and Disney. Later in life she enjoyed trips to exotic destinations, such as the trip to Israel with her church group. As a devout Catholic, she attended both Church of the Epiphany and Immaculate Conception Church. It was important for her to have her son attend Xavier High School prior to graduating from Cornell University.

Clotilde is survived by her beloved son, Gil Santaliz, daughter-in-law, Michelle, and granddaughter, Kate, a recent graduate of George Washington University.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation from 2PM to 6PM with a small service at 5PM on Sunday, October 17th, 2021 at Redden Funeral Home, 325 W. 14th St., NYC, NY
