Obituary for America Pardo

America Pardo was born a first generation American on 10/28/1923 in Pittsburg, PA as the first child to immigrant parents from Spain, Juan Pardo and Maria de las Mercedes Fernandez. The parents’ pride in their newly adopted home led them to naming her America.

Like so many individuals born in the early part of the 20th century, America was raised in a time where many hardships were forced to be endured. Eventually the sufferings of the Great Depression led her parents to decide to return to Spain. There, America and her family further endured the hardships of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. America’s inner strength, like so many of the greatest generation, allowed her to persevere and as she grew to adulthood, chose to return to the USA. Settling in NYC’s Greenwich Village in the 1950’s, she became a lifelong resident of her beloved neighborhood and had a successful career spanning three decades in the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Although no children of her own, she was instrumental in the upbringing of her five nephews and nieces who she loved like sons and daughters, eventually enjoying grand nephews and grand nieces.

Her gentle kindness and sense of humor was a delight to all who knew America. Her presence enriched the lives of all who were fortunate to have known her.
