Obituary for Mae Robinson

Remembering
Mae Robinson

In His infinite wisdom and in accordance with His plan, our Heavenly Father mercifully called Mae home to glory. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend peacefully completed her life’s journey on the afternoon of November 24th, 2021.

Mae was born on July 22nd, 1918 in Atlanta, Georgia. She spent her early years in Griffin Georgia, where she attended Broad Street school until the fourth grade. During those days Mae lived with her grandmother whom she affectionately called Granny. They shared a special relationship, until Mae, at age nine, returned from the store to find her beloved Granny had passed away. It was then that she left Georgia to live with her mother in New York City in October of 1927.

Mae attended Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn, New York. She did not attend college, but was as wise and well-spoken as anyone you could ever hold a conversation with. Mae could speak eloquently on any topic. Mae was an entrepreneur, and owned her own dress shop. She was the only black woman at that time to own her own business on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. There is no doubt that Mae’s fashion sense came from that time. Mae modeled her clothing and commissioned several fashion shows for other models to do the same. Mae remained fashionable until her last days.

Mae owned homes in Brooklyn, New York, Babylon, New York, and New York City. She had many accomplishments throughout her 103 years on this earth, but the greatest of these, the one that made her most proud, was being the matriarch of our family. Mae’s love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members is matched only by the love and reverence that we had in return for her.

Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; her mother, Addie Lyons; her children, Delores, Barry, and Charlene; and her closest and dearest friends. The wonderful memories of Mae’s life are cherished by her son, Henry; grandchildren, Barry Clay (Mignon), Miriam (Julio), Kyle, Henry Callahan III, Henry Robinson IV, Shaun, and Kayla; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Justin, Sophia, and Aria; and a host of friends, family, and loved ones.
