Obituary for Joan Grosser

Joan Grosser, age 91, of New York City died peacefully in her apartment on February 21, 2022 after a diagnosis of metastatic cancer.

Joan was born in the Bronx on March 25, 1930 and grew up in the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative where she made life-long friends.

Joan attended Evander Childs High School, graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in Literature and went on to receive graduate degrees in Literature and Social Work. She taught literature at Fordham University at Lincoln Center and worked as a Social Worker in drug counseling for St. Luke’s Hospital.

For the past 47 years Joan lived on the Upper West Side, where walks in Riverside Park defined her daily routine. She told stories about the regular walkers, and dog walkers with whom she always exchanged greetings. She had special relationships with her doormen, her fruit vendor and flower seller on Broadway, and so many others. Some were boisterous, some quiet and reserved, but all were part of her neighborhood, people she saw every day. Friendly and outgoing, she was generous with her compliments and made sure those around her felt appreciated.

She is survived by her husband, Martin Morand, sister Eve Marcus (Paul), brother Joe Zobel (Sonya), stepsister Yona Rothwax, children Philip Grosser, Jean Grosser (Larry Merriman) and Dan Grosser (Maureen Snyder), and grandchildren, David, Rebecca, Sam and Noah.
She is predeceased by her former husband, Charles Grosser and reconnected with her current husband Martin Morand at a neighborhood reunion. They had not seen each other in over 60 years. They married in 2007.

We will miss her lively spirit, her generosity, her love and her sense of humor. As she liked to remind us, in a world that often felt chaotic, “Everything is under control.”
