William Oxendine
William Oxendine was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on November 28, 1925 and Came to New York at the age of 8. As an only child raised by a single mother, William spent most of his youth and adult life in Harlem. He completed two years of vocational school where he studied machinery and carpentry, before leaving to join the army. William was proud of the six years he spent in the army and achieved the rank of sergeant before being honorably discharged. Following his honorable discharge, William worked in a night club and was a security officer.
William is survived by many loving friends, and his family, most especially his Aunt Iris. He was known affectionately as "Oxy" or simply "Oxendine", and by his family as "Billy." He was a kind and gentle man. He was quiet, but friendly and enjoyed spending time in the company of his peers. He had a passion for music and used to spend hours at the J & R music store. William was with WSFSSH for 15 years and one of 129th Street's original residents. A service in his honor will take place on April 19, 2012, at 2:00pm, at Redden Funeral Home, Inc. 325 W. 14th St., New York, NY 10014. Burial will take place in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, New York. He will be greatly missed.
