Obituary for John Robert Hawkins

HAWKINS, John R., 78, died at
home in New York on January
9, 2013, of lung disease. Raised
in Walpole, Mass., he moved to
New York after graduating from
Haverford College in music in
1956. He studied with Martha
Graham; taught English and
drama at Berkeley Carroll and
Rye Country Day schools;
edited at W. W. Norton, Downe
Publishing, and Franklin
Library; and earned his MSW at
New York University and
practiced psychotherapy. He
lived also in Sag Harbor,
growing flowers with a passion.
He inspired many; encouraged
those in Circle Repertory; and
sang with the New York City
Gay Men’s Chorus. His brothers
Sherman, Richard, and James,
his sister, Mary Sachs, fourteen
nieces and nephews, and twentyone
great-nieces and nephews
survive him; his brother Edward
died in 2010. Robert Chodo
Campbell, for whom he was a
mentor and friend, also survives
him. His longtime partner,
James E. Baker, a diplomat with
the Department of State and the
UN, died in 2001. Visiting hours
