New York City, 1973

My name in 1973 was Sue Calhoun and now I am Sue Durham.  I am not sure Amy will see this as it has been eight months since Bill passed.  I traveled with Bill's sisterinlaw Ellen Ritchey from Portland, Oregon to New York City by train across Canada and from Montreal into New York City.  Ellen's sister Ann was Bill's first wife and Amy was then two years old.  Ellen and I stayed with Ann, Bill, and Amy in Greenwich Village for a few days in March before we were taking a 3 and 1/2 month tour of Europe, England, Scotland and Ireland.  Ellen was 23 and I was 26.  We met while working at U.S. Bank and I met Ellen's parents as well.  While in New York City we were blessed to go to Arthurs and hear Bill play Jazz piano.  They were gracious hosts to us and opened my eyes to life in New York City in those years.  We went to Central Park zoo with Amy and spent time with Ann who was dealing with cancer and not doing well.

We returned to New York City in July and stayed one again with Ann and Bill and Amy before I took the train home to Oregoad Elln stayed on.  Ann was very sick at that time ad passed away hat September. While there Ann shared with me pesonally her fears fo Amy and Bill as she knew she did not have much time.  She loved them very much.

They were so nice and good to me and we met some interesting friends while there.  I shall always remember Bill and Ann and little Amy and am glad he found someone to share hi life with and to be there for little Amy who was so young.  We went to some restarants in the area and I loved every moment of my visit wt them.

Ellen was living with me on our return until she married her irst husband.  Unfortunately we lost touch lthough I visited with her in Bend when she lived there and I was so sad to learn Ellen passed at age 41 o cancer also.  I was i contact with her mother after.

I checked online about Bill just last year to seei he was playing at Arthurs and was tickled to see he was still playing there.  He obviously enjoyed his life and his music his whole life.

I am sad for Amy and his wife as know he was a good man.  He helped a girl from Oregon see New York City in their eyes and I shall never forget my time with them.
